Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Ceremony

On Wednesday 23rd October, we held our annual Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ceremony, celebrating the achievements of 12 students who successfully secured their Bronze Award.

In front of a crowd comprising proud family members – including parents and grandparents – the students were presented with their official DofE certificates by Mr Black, Mr Holmes and Tina Hobday, a representative from the scheme.

Over the last 12 months, students have worked hard to fulfil the different criteria to complete the award. They volunteered in school PE sessions, at the local birds of prey centre and even gave their time to litter-pick in local parks.

Students were also required to learn a new skill and had fun cooking and mastering Makaton, while they also took part in a physical activity such as football, netball, swimming and horse riding.

For the expedition segment of the award, they took on the Peaks and visited Stanton Moor.

Alongside the official DofE accolade, we also handed out a collection of funny, in-house awards, most of which were linked to these expeditions. The ‘Most Scared of Cows’ award was a highlight amongst students!

While there, we also officially launched this year’s scheme, invited new students to take part in the Bronze Award and encouraging others to pursue Silver and beyond.

It was a fantastic event and one that highlighted the impressive achievements of our award winners!

A key part of our extracurricular offering, we look forward to promoting the DofE scheme at Mercia Academy for many years to come.
